Daimler History:
In 1893,Frederick Simms started a new company, the “Daimler Motor Syndicate” after purchasing the UK patent rights to the Gottlieb Daimlersengine. Three years later, Frederick and Harry Lawson moved into car production by forming "Daimler Motor Company”. They were based in Coventry city. Daimler soon became the official transportation of Royalty in 1898.In 1908,the company acquired a Knight Engine licence to build sleeve valve engines for its automobiles. It was soon producing military vehicles and cars in 1910 as it became part of BirminghamsBSA group. Daimler also built engines for the very fast tanks in 1914.It formed the Associated Daimler Company after merging with Associated Equipment Company in 1920.Daimler through BSA then took over Lanchester Motor Company in 1930.During world war II, Daimler concentrated on military vehicles only. Daimler produced the Ferret armoured car. Daimler struggled after the War, producing too many models with short runs and limited production, and frequently selling too few of each model, while Jaguar seemed to know what the public wanted and expanded rapidly. Jaguar eventually acquired Daimler in 1960.William Lyons just wanted the manufacturing facilities but later had to decide on what to do with the Daimler vehicles. Production of Daimler Majestic Major and the sporty Dart continued using the Daimler V8 engine. The last cars not designed by Jaguar to bear the Daimler badge were in 1968. The last car to have a Daimler engine was the Model 250.In 1966,Jaguar merged with the British Motor Company to form British Motor Holdings(BMH).Subsequent vehicles were badge-engineered Jaguars. The Daimler Double Six Vanden Plas was a Jaguar XJ-12 with the Daimler badge and fluted grille and boot handle the only outward differences from the Jaguar. In the same period, Daimler became the second-largest double-decker bus manufacturer in Britain, with the "Fleetline" model. In 1968, BMH merged with the Leyland Motor Corporation to give the British Leyland Motor Corporation. The Daimler marque stayed within BLMC and its subsequent forms until 1982, at which point Jaguar (and Daimler) went their own way and the Austin Rover Group went the other. In 1989 the Ford Motor Company took over Jaguar and with it the right to use the Daimler name.
